Central Alberta Dermatology is an experienced clinical trial site located in Red Deer, Alberta. Our multidisciplinary team of dermatologists and clinical research staff supports industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials across a broad range of dermatologic conditions. We participate in studies involving alopecia, vitiligo, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), eczema, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), acne, and more. Our goal is to contribute to the advancement of dermatologic treatments by delivering high-quality research and supporting patient-centered care.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Innovation Laboratories is a key piece of research infrastructure aimed at accelerating scientific discovery for children’s health. Located on the University of Alberta’s North Campus, this advanced research space is essential for discovery research and a cornerstone for pediatric clinical trials. By housing critical programs within the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), the Innovation Laboratories enable research that is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms and developing new treatments. Key WCHRI programs operating here include the Translational Genomics Hub (which fast-tracks gene discovery for rare diseases) and the Stem Cell Core (which uses advanced organoid models to study human development). This centralized, state-of-the-art environment is vital to the development of novel therapies and diagnostics for children.

The WCHRI Stem Cell Core, located in the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Innovation Laboratories, provides essential expertise and training for researchers interested in integrating advanced human models into their work.

While animal studies remain vital, they cannot fully replicate human biology. The WCHRI Stem Cell Core focuses on cutting-edge techniques, including human stem-cell research and organoids. Organoids are tiny, lab-grown versions of organs that mimic the structure and function of real human tissue. These models allow scientists to:

  • Study how human tissues and organs develop.
  • Understand how diseases progress.
  • Test new drugs and interventions with greater precision.

This work opens the door to personalized treatments and significant advances in regenerative medicine. Because stem-cell and organoid research is technically complex, the Core supports researchers by providing advice on model best practices, offering hands-on training, and facilitating collaboration.


WCHRI Translational Genomics Hub (TGH)

The Translational Genomics Hub (TGH) is a critical research platform within the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) that accelerates the discovery of genetic causes for undiagnosed diseases in children. For pediatric clinical trials, the TGH is essential because identifying a causative gene is often the first step toward developing a novel, targeted treatment. The TGH removes key barriers for clinical investigators by managing complex logistics, including:

  • Ethics and enrollment: Handling ethical requirements and much of the participant enrollment process.
  • Sample management: Coordinating sample collection, tracking and logistics.
  • Scientific access: Facilitating connections to specialized local scientists and potential research funding.

This streamlined support enables clinicians to apply cutting-edge research approaches to their patients, helping to pinpoint the genetic variants responsible for disease and fast-track the path from gene discovery to novel treatment development. TGH is supported through infrastructure and equipment located in the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Innovation Laboratories.


WCHRI Data Coordinating Centre (DCC)

The WCHRI Data Coordinating Centre (DCC) provides world-class clinical research data management, methods, and analytics support to WCHRI members and child health collaborators across Canada.

Our specialized team of data managers and statisticians offers expertise in:

  • Study design and statistics, including sample size, power calculations and randomization schedules.
  • Database and electronic case report form development and implementation (REDCap).
  • Data management and reporting, including data validation, query management, adverse event coding and Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) support.
  • Data analysis and interpretation of results.

Focusing on the highest industry standards, the DCC supports over 350 new research projects each year, from local studies to large multi-site clinical trials.


WCHRI Clinical Research Support in Women’s Health

Women's Health

The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) is dedicated to advancing women’s health through research. We support studies that address health issues unique to women, such as menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and gynecologic and reproductive health (including conditions like endometriosis and urogynecologic issues). We also focus on health issues that may affect women differently or disproportionately, such as heart disease, inflammatory diseases, and metabolic conditions like diabetes. To move research from discovery to patient care, WCHRI established a dedicated platform at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women (LHHW). This platform consists of a dedicated specialized coordination team based in the Dale Sheard Centre for Solutions in Women’s Health. Our research coordinators support our members throughout the entire research process, ensuring rigor and adherence to regulatory standards. This essential infrastructure helps develop interventions and treatments tailored to women’s specific needs.


WCHRI Pediatric Clinical Trials and Clinical Research Coordination

The Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) addresses the growing need among child health researchers to offer children access to promising new therapies, including complex Phase I trials (first-in-human studies). To meet this demand, WCHRI has developed state-of-the-art infrastructure and support services to expand and improve clinical research in children’s health. We are one of the only centres in Canada offering this level of comprehensive support for the highly regulated environment of pediatric clinical trials. Reflecting this critical need, WCHRI’s specialized coordination team partners closely with investigators, hospital staff, ethics boards, and industry. This collaboration enables us to safely offer children and families the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and research. The WCHRI coordination team works across units at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, including the Pediatric Clinical Investigation Unit.

Rejuvenation Dermatology Clinical Trials supports dermatology clinical research through experienced investigators, dedicated research staff, and standardized site infrastructure across seven clinical trial sites in Canada, including 4 sites in Alberta. The team conducts Phase II–IV industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies, providing patient recruitment, protocol-driven visits, data collection, and regulatory compliance in accordance with GCP standards.

The clinics’ imaging expertise and specialized services also make them valuable partners for supporting clinical trials and research initiatives.


Banff Sport Medicine Foundation

The Banff Sport Medicine Foundation (BSMF) is a registered research and education charity with a Mission to prevent, treat, rehabilitate, and research musculoskeletal and sport injuries among people of all ages and abilities. BSMF’s clinical research program is designed to enhance patient care and the overall quality of life for people with musculoskeletal injuries. In collaboration with the Banff Sport Medicine Clinic, BSMF participates in several multi-centre randomized clinical trials (RCTs), leads local RCTs, and maintains large-scale prospective surgical cohort studies. These comprehensive surgical cohorts include demographic, pathoanatomic, and surgical outcomes data for patellar instability and anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions, representing some of the largest study cohorts of these patient populations worldwide.

In collaboration with the provincial government, a number of academic and research organizations have introduced initiatives to position Alberta as an even more attractive destination for conducting clinical trials.
