Alberta Transplant Applied Genomics Centre at the University of Alberta

The Alberta Transplant Applied Genomics Centre (ATAGC) is a research centre and core service facility with multidisciplinary expertise spanning the areas of applied genomics, pathology, molecular biology, immunology, biostatistics, and experimental design. The center offers access to a moledcular microscope diagnostic system, transcript assessment, and computational biology and bioastatistics.

The mission of the CCI CTU is to initiate and conduct clinical trials that improve the lives of current and future cancer patients. The CCI CTU has more than 60 qualified investigators across multiple health disciplines, employs over 100 clinical trial nurses, clinical trial coordinators & assistants with tumor group specific expertise and has an efficient administrative core funded by the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The CCI CTU strives to place more than 500 people with cancer on new cancer treatments (the highest per capita accrual in Canada) per year, including local investigator initiated studies and first in human drug testing. CCI CTU  contributes to many practice-changing global studies and save the Alberta health care system nearly $10M CND in drug costs every year.


Alberta Cardiovascular & Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS) at the Mazankowski Heart Institute at University of Alberta

ABACUS is a cardiovascular and stroke research centre integrating clinical research activities for out-patients. It allows for research in a high tech tertiary hospital without affecting clinical waitlists and provides researchers the ability to perform research studies in close collaboration with clinical departments. Currently, ABACUS accommodates an established Cardiovascular Ultrasound Research Unit as well as a Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic and offers access to various 2D and 3D echocardiography equipement. It also houses several research coordinators looking after numerous patients in different research studies.


Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre at the University of Alberta

The Peter S. Allen MR Research Centre is 100% research dedicated, state-of-the-art facility of Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. It is a home of two full-body MRI systems (3T Siemens Prisma, and 4.7T) backed by a group of very skilled and enthusiastic professionals and provides a wide range of possibilities in magnetic resonance research and clinical research applications.

Our scientists perform studies across all pillars of research, from reductionist isolated cell culture preparations to clinical trials in human patients, in order to define the fundamental neurobiology that underlies the function of the healthy brain or its dysfunction in mental illness. The unit provides infrastructure for analytical neurochemistry, in vivo imaging in animal models, behavioural testing in rodents, primary cell culture, and quantitative and qualitative immunoassays and histology.


Flow Cytometry Facility at Katz Group Center at the University of Alberta

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Flow Cytometry Facility is a multi-user facility at the University of Alberta. The facility provides a variety of high quality services for internal and private sector investigators. Today the facility houses 11 instruments (2 FACSArias, an MA900, 3 LSR-Fortessas, an Attune NxT, an Aurora, an ImageStream mkII, an ExoView R200, and a CytoFLEX-S) that offer state-of-the-art analytical flow cytometry, cell sorting, and data analysis.


Child and Adolescent Imaging Research at the University of Calgary

The goal of Child and Adolescent Imaging Research (CAIR) is to develop and implement a comprehensive pediatric imaging research program including key recruitments, state-of-the-art technology, space and skilled staff. Equipment includes a 3T MRI Scanner.


IsletCore at Alberta Diabetes Institute at University of Alberta

IsletCore is a campus-based lab that offers pancreatic islet isolations accompanied by various assays of islet function and metabolism. IsletCore provides support or full service for a variety of procedures including: Human pancreatic islet isolation, islet banking, basal characterization of donor islets, and coordination of ethical approvals.

The multidisciplinary unit features advanced equipment, including five private clinical exam rooms, a three-bed open day ward, and a blood processing area. It also provices access to specialized facilities like a kitchen/dining room, resting metabolic assessment tools, whole body calorimetry (one of only two in Canada), air displacement plethysmography (BodPod), and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).


Cyclotron at Cross Cancer Institute at the University of Alberta

There are currently two AHS cyclotrons in Edmonton that produce radiopharmaceuticals for medical use located at: the Cross Cancer Institute and the Medical Isotope and Cyclotron Facility (MICF) at University of Alberta South Campus. These cyclotrons are similar devices but can produce different radioisotopes, offering a more diverse suite of radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis and research. The two cyclotrons in Edmonton have the ability to back each other up during shutdowns or maintenance.


Featured Assets

In collaboration with the provincial government, a number of academic and research organizations have introduced initiatives to position Alberta as an even more attractive destination for conducting clinical trials. These include initiatives to improve start-up times, enhance patient recruitment, centralize trial management and enable access to high-quality medical data.
