Pediatric Clinical Investigation Unit at the Stollery Children’s Hospital at University of Alberta

The Pediatric Clinical Investigation Unit (PCIU) at Stollery Children’s Hospital offers extensive diagnostic and clinical research services, including tests, IV starts, and medication administration. Staffed by Registered Nurses (RNs), the unit is equipped with three curtained treatment spaces and an enclosed private room. It features state-of-the-art monitoring and specialty technology to support clinical trials, with immediate access to hospital emergency services, laboratory, pharmacy, and imaging support. For complex studies requiring long days or overnight stays, pediatric patients are supported by the Phase 1 Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU) at the Walter C. MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre, which is located within the same facility. The PCIU and CIU clinical capabilities are augmented by the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) Pediatric Clinical Trials and Research Coordination Team. This partnership ensures investigators receive comprehensive assistance—from study setup and recruitment to regulatory adherence and overall management—while guaranteeing that pediatric patients and families receive safe, age-appropriate care.
